Collected in the mountains of Taiwan, this is a distinct variety of the species with oblong evergreen foliage of a thinner texture than the species and with a matt upper surface. Cream flowers borne in branched conical terminal heads in July, followed by a mass of red berries. Makes a large shrub eventually and totally hardy here, even through 2010 at -14c.
