Carex plantaginea

The Broad-leaved sedge from Eastern N. America is native to deciduous woodland and makes bold clumps with seersucker leaves to 3cm across. Foliage emerges bright green and is clearly linear-veined in a corrugated fashion. The golden-cream 'flower' heads are borne above the foliage to a height of about 30cm on wiry green stems, heavily banded with dark maroon-purple. An evergreen for at least semi-shade to shade, moist or dry, and proven drought tolerant here. A great textural contrast to ferns, Epimediums etc.
