Acanthus sennii

An herbaceous plant in the UK, but in nature an evergreen shrub. Here this Ethiopian highlander is grown for the splendid heavily spined opposite foliage on dark stems, topped in autumn and into winter, if mild, by striking red flowers. Best planted early summer to allow a good rhizome to form before the next winter. Mulch over the base if you are in a cold area, though I didn't here during the death inducing December 2022 and had no problems at all, and I'm in a rural inland frost pocket hellhole.
