Very rare in cultivation, this Chinese and N Vietnamese evergreen maple forms a small tree in the UK; similar in some ways to A. laevigatum, but with smaller, neater, slender foliage; oblong-lanceolate and up to 11cm long. Red-tinted new growth contrasts with the rich-green glossy foliage; clusters of white/purple flowers in early summer are followed by highly attractive vivid-red samaras (seeds). Hardy in the Cotswolds for many years, even through the extreme conditions of 2009-10 at way below -10c, this is recommended for a reasonably sheltered position in most areas.
