Hailing from the Caucasus and the Hyrcanian forests bordering the Caspian Sea, where we found this growing witht Pterocarya fraxinifolia, Parrotia persica, Quercus castaneifolia etc. A very vigorous species making tall trees in a relatively short time, with splendid characterful trunks. Broad deciduous foliage up to 15cm long. The usually yellow male catkins are seen very early in the season. For most soils and sites, moist or not.
