Aloiampelos (Aloe) striatula

A hardy Aloe!! Well almost. This multistemmed evergreen shrubby species from the colder parts of South Africa is successfully grown outside in various unexpected parts of the UK in a favourable, sunny, very well drained spot. Generally survives unscathed most UK winters these days, like the famous and floriferous specimen at RHS Hyde Hall in rural Essex, though usually regrows from the base if cut back by extreme temps. Multi-stemmed to 1.5m high, though usually half that, topped by orange and yellow Kniphofia-like flowers in July over the succulent deep-green leaves.
