Begonia villifolia

Rarely grown and barely known in cultivation, this species is native to SE Yunnan, Vietnam and Myanmar, where it is found on moist rocks etc, with its fat hairy rhizomes forming a ready means of spread. The foliage is boldly marked with a silvery zonal variegation and the deep red undersides of the leaves bleeds through to the green above. This is a success outside in mild Cornish gardens with light frost. Keep it potted, then propagate and try some outside with a good winter mulch.
