A very handsome large, upright evergreen shrub or small tree for a fairly sheltered site where it is then usually completely hardy. Can't be mistaken for anything else with its large leathery leaves, pale glaucous beneath, and loose clusters of starry white flowers in May. Magnificent, huge, ancient specimens are to be found in wet west coast gardens, but it can make a reasonably sizable specimen in cold rural locations inland as well, as near here in the Cotswolds.
