An evergreen large shrub or more usually a small tree given time, bearing fairly small, elliptic, dark green foliage. Distinctive conspicuously purple-veined creamy-white flowers in May and June are followed by pale-pink fruits splitting to reveal vivid red seeds in late autumn. From an original collection in the Himalaya, this hardy species usually makes an elegant small tree given a reasonably sheltered site. For any reasonable soil in sun or semi-shade. Rarely offered.
