The Heartnut from Japan is that country's variety of the mainland Chinese species J. mandshurica. A fast growing bold looking walnut species with stout shoots, making a medium sized tree with leaves to 60cm long, or up to 90cm on young vigorous specimens. The striking foliage, softly hairy in youth but persisting only on the underside, can bear up to 19 leaflets. Rarely seen or grown, but perfectly hardy and easy on almost all soils. Sometimes treated as a variety of J. ailanthifolia, or as a species, but these and others have now been sunk under J. mandshurica.
