One of the finest species for foliage, only introduced from Sichuan in 1990, this is very closely related to the excellent R. calophytum and like it makes a magnificent specimen, eventually of umbrella-like form. A large shrub or even small tree under ideal conditions such as favoured West coast gardens, this bears long slim foliage up to 20cm long by only 6cm wide, which erupt from bright-red bud scales in spring. Fat trusses of white or pink flowers, each with a dark-red blotch, are borne in spring. For acid soil in semi-shade.
