A Tertiary relic, surviving in the Caspian and Caucasian forests. Seed for these was found in southern Azerbaijan, where the species growth form is more like an elm or beech, very different from the clone long cultivated in the UK and beyond. Bark is mainly smooth pale-grey, and the elm-like leaves turn to gold and russet shades in autumn. A long lived large tolerant hardy tree.
