Acer nipponicum

A rare species in Japan, this is equally rare in cultivation here, though grows well across the British Isles and can be found in various good arboreta. Notable features are the large, broad leaves, with all veins deeply impressed, giving a textured appearance, and the big bunches of large winged seeds. The new shoots are bright green. A rather distinctive, very hardy large leaved tree of only medium size, usually reaching about 10m tall.
