Alnus subcordata ex NJM 13.009

Hailing from the Caucasus and the Hyrcanian forests bordering the Caspian Sea, where we found this growing with Pterocarya fraxinifolia, Parrotia persica, Quercus castaneifolia etc. A very vigorous species making tall trees in a relatively short time, with splendid, characterful, sometimes deeply fluted trunks. Broad dark-green deciduous foliage up to 15cm long. The attractive male catkins are usually yellow and are produced exceptionally early, often by mid-December or early January. For most soils and sites and especially happy if moist.
