A large shrub or small tree eventually in ideal conditions, related to C. japonica, but with larger flowers of a purer red and native to China. Glossy dark evergreen foliage, paler beneath, with abundant rich-red flowers usually up to 10cm across and with a boss of yellow stamen, produced from mid-winter to spring.
