Previously known as Chordospartium stevensonii, the rare Weeping broom from New Zealand looks entirely dead when very young (straw brown shoots), but matures to be an elegant beauty, making a medium to large shrub here, with weeping whipcord like branches, devoid of leaves. Racemes of white to pale-pink pea flowers, each with a deep purple-pink blotch in summer. Generally hardy in the UK with modern winters, to -10c or so, but requiring sun and well drained soil. This makes a tree to 8m tall in the very few places it grows wild in NE South Island, New Zealand.
