Carya illinoinensis (ex ‘Kanza’)

The Pecan of the USA makes only a small to medium tree here, depending on summer heat, compared to specimens found in N America. However, the extra heat from climate change is much to its liking and nut production here will improve in yield as the UK warms. Reaching only 21m here in the UK so far, this walnut relative still makes a fine specimen, best suited to retentive soils in full sun. Handsome, large pinnate leaves with up to 17 leaflets, turning rich yellow in autumn, and in a good summer potentially delicious nuts. 'Kanza' is a Northern variety, better for the UK.
