Carya laciniosa

The 'Big Shellbark Hickory' from the Eastern USA makes a tough, easily grown, medium sized tree here, bearing very big, pinnate leaves, sometimes as much as 75cm long, turning to a most reliable and outstanding rich vibrant warm-yellow in autumn; being one of the very finest trees in this regard. The grey bark becomes rough and fissured in later life. Very hardy and easy in most soils. As with virtually all hickories, being a distinctly tap rooted species this is best planted as small as possible for good establishment.
