Chionanthus retusus (35L)

A large deciduous hardy shrub, or small tree after many years, from China and Korea grown for its massed display of filigree snow-white flowers in early summer, when the crown literally turns white. These flowers are followed by small plum shaped bloomy-black fruit. Very hardy and long lived; exceptional old specimens to 10m tall can be seen at Kew or on chalk at Highdown, for example. Suited to most soil types and a lover of heat in summer, this will be tolerant of a warming UK climate.
