Eriobotrya japonica

The Loquat, from China and Japan. A hardy small tree and one of great presence and exotic appearance. The evergreen leaves are corrugated, thick textured and with pale brown tomentum beneath, rich glossy green above and reach up to 30cm long. Scented white flowers in clusters produced in autumn/winter/spring, followed if mild during winter by utterly delicious orange fruit the following summer (I get a few here from time to time, but in London they are prolific). Best in a sheltered position for maximum effect, but fundamentally a hardy tree.
