Fragaria vesca ‘Muricata’

Loved by small kids everywhere, the good ol' 'wild' or 'alpine' strawberry is a stalwart of scrubby edges in the garden where it provides a welcome low level snack for little people. In this wacky form, first mentioned in 1597, lost and then rediscovered in Plymouth in 1627 by John Tradescant, the conical red fruits are covered in spiky green appendages and the flower's white petals are replaced by leafy green bracts. Rather bizarre and worthy of a place in any oddball's garden.
