The Chinese honey locust is rarely seen in the UK, though makes an easily grown medium sized deciduous tree here. Noted for its toughness, it is hardy and drought tolerant, with attractive pinnate foliage composed of dainty leaflets, turning bright yellow in autumn in good years. The flowers in summer are nothing to write home about, but the large seeds pods that follow most certainly are, being ornamental and unusual, as are the formidable spines that arm the trunk and branches. The latter are most often branched and up to 16cm long, creating quite the spectacle!
