Hedychium ellipticum Red bract form

Shaving brush ginger. One of the most attractive of all hardy gingers, forming spectacular inflorescences in late summer, with spidery pure-white flowers erupting in an upright fashion from deep-red bracts (in this superlative form), topped off with spreading orange-red exserted stamen that reach well beyond the other flower parts. Excellent broad, textured, rich-green foliage is held on stems well marked in red. Height 1.2m. This is hardy across the UK, especially if mulch for winter, and an excellent pot plant indoors.
