Magnolia ‘John Congreve’

A hybrid from the magnificent Mount Congreve estate in S.E. Ireland. A cross between M. sprengeri and M. sargentiana robusta, this fine tree was selected for its cyclamen-purple flowers that share more genes with the sprengeri parent and therefore flower later, helping to escape frosts, but also tip slightly outwards, showing their faces, like sargentiana.
