A plant of striking appearance, with very large pinnate foliage on crimson stalks, turning vibrant rich-yellow in autumn in this form. Panicles of white (or green) flowers up to 45cm long are produced in early summer, followed by marble-sized fruit, starting violet-white and turning red, then black. Twigs are very stout and rigid, producing a particularly distinctive winter silhouette and the trunk bears a rugged bark. Hardy and tolerant, for acid or alkaline soil.
