Osmanthus armatus

A large dense, evergreen, hardy Chinese shrub (or even small tree to 4.5m given long enough and a good site), covered in thick-textured rigid foliage, lined with spiny teeth, which emerge with a bronzy tint in spring. Clusters of scented white flowers line the branches in autumn. As the plant matures the spininess of the leaves lessen to the point that they eventually become entire. A tough shrub for sun or semi-shade, suited to any reasonably drained soil.
