Phlomoides maximowiczii

From Mongolia, NE China and Far Eastern Russia, this herbaceous Phlomis relative grows naturally in a steppe environment and is suited to full sun 'prairie' style plantings in cultivation, or just as a handsome addition to a mixed border. A very hardy perennial, bulking up well and forming a mound of green leaves, from which rise strongly vertical wine-red leafy stems to about 1.5m high in summer. These bear multiple whorls of pale-purple pink flowers. For any reasonably drained soil in sun.
