Physaliastrum sinense

A close relation of Physalis, found originally on the slopes of Emei Shan, Sichuan, this makes a much branched herbaceous perennial to 60cm tall. Small clusters of creamy flowers in summer are followed by the distinctive inflated orange lanterns in autumn, much like a Physalis though hairier and more ribbed. For any reasonable soil in sun or shade.
