Pinus brachyptera

'South Western Ponderosa Pine' was previously considered at different times a variety or subsp. of P. ponderosa, though this rare species from Far SW USA and NW Mexico is now recognised as distinct (2024). It makes a tall handsome tree with a rounded crown, graced with fairly long grey-green needles, up to 20cm in length. Attractive vanilla scented bark, forming broad cinnamon-brown plates at maturity. Hardy and heat and drought tolerant, though very happy with wet summers and winters also, this is worth growing anywhere in the UK for climate change resilience.
