Pinus greggii

From Mexico, this is a perfectly hardy and very drought tolerant species in the UK, given a reasonably sheltered position, where it will make a medium sized tree. Makes a handsome specimen on account of its grass-green young foliage, up to 15cm long. The slim, shiny, orange-brown cones turn beige and persist for many years on the branches, like its relative P. radiata, waiting for a periodic forest fire to open them. Best in a well lit position, as with all pines, to encourage a full rounded crown. Very rarely available.
