Pittosporum ralphii

This slow growing medium sized evergreen shrub from New Zealand is surprisingly rare though generally far hardier than old literature suggests; I know a thriving plant in rural Oxfordshire for example and others came through the astonishingly arctic winter on 1981/82 near Bristol. Clusters of dark crimson flowers with yellow anthers are borne against simple matt green foliage in summer. Closely related to P. crassifolium and like it superbly suited to resisting salt laden gales on the coast, where it makes an excellent screen.
