Rarely grown in the UK, though completely hardy, this quince relative from China forms a small deciduous or rarely semi-evergreen tree or large shrub, depending on location, but can achieve 8 or 9m in Southern UK at least, given 40 years or so. Splendid flaking three-tone bark in shades of green and beige, on a fluted trunk. Pink Chaenomeles-like flowers in spring, followed by huge egg-shaped fragrant and edible quince-like fruit. Becomes more tree-like with hotter summers, so more shrubby in the North or West, though warming summers will change that.
