The Japanese Wingnut produces no suckers, unlike P. fraxinifolia, and makes a fast growing medium-sized hardy tree to 20m, though is rarely seen outside arboreta. The handsome pinnate leaves of this walnut relative bear up to 21 leaflets and reach 30cm long. Like other members of the genus the long catkin-like seed clusters are ornamental en-masse and clothe the branches from summer into winter, reaching up to 30cm long. Tolerant of most soils with reasonable moisture. I've seen this as a tall forest tree in the mountains of Kyushu, Japan.
