A great rarity in cultivation here, this deciduous oak is very closely related to Q. castaneifolia, though endemic to coastal mountains in Algeria and Tunisia where it grows with Q. suber and Q. canariensis. Differing from Q. castaneifolia in it's shorter leaves, smaller stature and various other details, it grows well here in the UK and old trees have reached 20m. For any reasonably well drained soil and highly suited to a warming drying climate.
