Quercus agrifolia

The Coast Live Oak from California is perfectly suited to the UK climate, with good specimens known as far north as cool and moist W. Scotland. A small to medium sized tree forming a rounded crown of dark, black-green, semi-orbicular, spiny-edged foliage over a trunk covered in smooth grey bark, cracking into plates over time. Vigorous in youth, this is ideally suite to a warming and drying UK climate, having evolved to endure months of drought and heat. Sun and well drained soil. A rough average height of mature specimens in the UK is about 15m tall.
