Very interesting amongst the Red oak group in being tolerant of thin dry alkaline soils, Buckley's oak from Texas and Oklahoma is of course also happy in deeper neutral to acid soils, as can be seen with the few trees as yet present in the UK, and is heat and drought tolerant. A close relative of Q. shumardii etc, though this makes only a small to medium sized tree, usually 9 to 15m high at maturity. Autumn colour is potentially of the highest grade, in saturated vivid-red or orange. Hardy and easy, this is pre-adapted to a drier and warmer climate change future in the UK.
