A hardy evergreen oak from the SE USA, highly heat tolerant and in that respect most suited to a warming climate in the UK, though still very rare here, despite good specimens in a number of collections. This has so far reached 16m tall in the UK (2025), with various others over 10m, and seems it will make a medium sized specimen of bushy, dense habit, with slim foliage, occasionally shallowly lobed. Basically evergreen, with leaves flushing bronze in spring and the oldest leaves turning red in autumn before being shed. Apparently not suited to alkaline soils.
