The Mongolian oak makes a rather striking small to medium sized hardy deciduous tree in the UK with large leaves and thick branches. The well-lobed foliage is borne in dense clusters at the end of the branches and differs from the far more often seen subsp. crispula in the more rounded lobes. Autumn colour can be a rich yellow, orange or red and the bark remains a slightly shiny beige, marked by vertical fissures, for a number of decades. For any reasonable soil apart from thin chalk.
