Quercus suber

The Cork Oak from the Mediterranean basin makes a highly characterful short stemmed, eventually spreading, medium sized evergreen tree with amazing pale-beige, extremely thick, rugged, fire-proof cork bark; even young plants start to show this feature very quickly. Perfectly hardy throughout the UK; one of the finest specimens in the British Isles has been growing near here on the edge of the Severn Valley for the last 150 or so years and survived -20c in 1982, months of deep freeze in 1963, etc etc. Highly drought tolerant and perfect for a warming, drying UK climate.
