Rhododendron luteum

A classic deciduous azalea, grown primarily for the superb fragrance emitted from the yellow flowers in May. This usually forms a medium sized shrub with rounded trusses of funnel-shaped, strongly and richly fragrant yellow flowers whose scent can easily travel on the breeze. The foliage, 5 to 10cm long, turns to shades of deep-red, purple and orange in autumn. From NE Turkey, Caucasus and E. Europe, this was probably native here once and has naturalised in some areas. For acid soil in semi-shade.
