Sida hermaphrodita

A magnet for bees, this giant mallow relative from Eastern North America offers exceptional bee pasture and high honey yields. The Virginia mallow or Virginia fanpetals is a fast growing, potentially very tall statement plant with rather splendid maple-like foliage, deeply lobed and with drawn out tips, giving an exotic effect. Strong upright stems to 2.5m are topped in summer with heads of small white flowers rich in nectar, suitable for honey, short tongued bumble and solitary bees. Tolerant of both moist and dry soils.
