Silphium perfoliatum

The Cup plant from the prairies, wet meadows and woods of the Midwest and Southern USA makes an imposing, tall perennial up to 2.5m tall, topped in late summer and early autumn with branched heads of large yellow daisy flowers. The squared stems are clothed in perfoliate leaves; ie they completely surround the stem, forming 'cups' that gather rainwater. Happiest in soil that doesn't get too dry and ideal for heavy wet clay, though tolerant of some drying. Very hardy, for sun or semi-shade.
