Styrax suberifolius var. hayataianus

Extremely rare in cultivation, but a few specimens grow successfully in Cornwall and the UBC Botanic Garden in Vancouver. Distinct in its persistent, deep-green, leathery, yet elegant leaves, strikingly pale-grey densely hairy beneath. Racemes of subtly scented white flowers in late spring. The bark is a handsome smooth brown. Neutral to acid soil and shelter. Exact hardiness unknown, though definitely for milder gardens. A small tree.
