Vernonia noveboracensis

The New York Ironweed makes a bold statement in late summer herbaceous plantings, reaching 1.8m on strong upright stems, topped by flattened heads of fluffy rich-purple flowers in September. This has a Joe Pye Weed quality to it and looks well at the back of a border or amongst bold sweeps of grasses. Tolerant of quite wet soils though not needing them.
