Alangium chinense

A very rarely seen but handsome large shrub or small tree with bold, maple-like leaves and clusters of little white flowers in June and July, like tiny white lilies with recurved petals and yellow centres. Best with plenty of sun to ripen growth, it is rarer in cultivation than A. platanifolium, and is more needy of a warm, sunny summer position in a reasonably summer warm county of the UK. Proven hardy in the N.E. USA and mainland Europe, it is summer warmth rather than winter cold that is relevant. Leaves less lobed than A. platanifolium, with larger flower clusters.
