This very rare form of the Chilean 'Foxtail Bamboo' was selected by David Crampton from a batch of seedlings, principally for its very deeply coloured, chocolate-purple culms which show colour much better in older, bigger culms, but also for the new shoots being washed in a purple tint. The colour lasts very well and is impressive as the plants get bigger. Tightly clump forming, reaching about 3-4m, sometimes smaller. For any ordinary soil and fairly drought tolerant once established.
