Dacrycarpus dacrydioides – hardy form

Once thought tender, this New Zealand endemic grows in various fairly cold locations in the UK where it has endured intense cold. Additionally, the form I grow and propagate has been hardy to -14c outside, frozen solid in a pot through the mega winter of December 2010! An individual, distinctive and attractive small tree in the UK where it forms a conical crown of slim branches and very small, narrow, two ranked, spirally arranged, brown tinted leaves in youth, turning green in adulthood. Although looking dead this is very much a natural feature of the species!
