This rapidly growing tree, hailing from Chile and Argentina, is known there as Raulí. It grows a trunk like a mast, reaches a large size, and bears hornbeam-like foliage which appears briefly bronze in very early spring, quickly turning a very fresh-green and then to mid green for summer, turning usually orange or red in autumn. Easy and hardy in most soils apart from thin chalk, this has been seen to thrive in alkaline soils in more than one place. with the largest trees usually found in the moister west.
