Pinus patula

Well known to all serious tree lovers and one of the most beautiful of all conifers. A Mexican pine with the most elegant drooping, long green needles up to 30cm in length, hanging from the branches in curtains. The bark is a handsome orange-brown and the branches wide spreading, it makes a maximum height of 23m in the UK. Hardy, even through extreme cold like the 2009-10 winters near here at circa -15c, but perhaps not for the very coldest parts of Scotland etc. I've seen great forests of this species in Mexico, where it gets to a much greater size than in the UK.
