Frangula alnus ‘Aspleniifolia’

The Alder buckthorn is a rather inconspicuous native large deciduous shrub or even small tree, but in this form it is transformed into a thing of beauty. Foliage is reduced to thread-like whisps a mere 3 to 5mm wide, making a very fine foliage plant, especially in autumn when they turn an excellent deep yellow. Small round fruit start bright red and turn black, making a good meal for birds, particularly thrushes. Tough and easy, this is the primary larval food plant of the Brimstone butterfly. For any ordinary soil, this makes an unusual but highly attractive native hedge.
